KATHMANDU: Tensions have risen across Nepal’s Madhesh Province following allegations that an offensive TikTok video hurt religious sentiments, triggering protests and clashes in multiple districts.

The controversy began in Janakpur, Dhanusha, and has since spread to Birgunj in Parsa, with demonstrations and sporadic violence reported.

According to sources, two youths from Janakpur—identified as Haider Ansari and Amanat Ansari—posted a TikTok video a few days ago that allegedly included remarks contrary to religious tolerance while referencing “Hindustan.” Local community leaders claimed the video hurt religious sentiments and handed the two youths over to the police.

While discussions were underway between both sides at the Khajuri Area Police Office, some groups reportedly became agitated after learning that the youths had been taken into custody.

Amid the unrest, an attack was reportedly carried out on a mosque in Janakpur.

Dhanusha Police spokesperson DSP Ganesh Bam confirmed that individuals involved in the mosque attack have also been arrested.

However, the incident has heightened tensions not only in Dhanusha and Parsa but across all eight districts of Madhesh Province.

Citing the sensitive situation, high-level security sources said security measures have been tightened throughout the province.

The impact of the dispute has also been felt in Birgunj, where protesters took to the streets early this morning. Fearing that demonstrations could turn violent, police have deployed additional security forces in the area.

Local authorities have urged all communities to exercise restraint and maintain religious and cultural harmony, stressing the importance of peace and mutual respect amid the heightened tensions.
