SuryaKunda Hydro starts commercial production at 11 MW Upper Tadi Khola Project

KATHMANDU: SuryaKunda Hydro Electric Limited has officially commenced commercial electricity production at its 11-megawatt Upper Tadi Khola Hydropower Project, located in Dupcheshwar Rural Municipality, Nuwakot district.
According to the company, construction of the project was completed on Ashad 18, followed by a successful 15-day trial operation.
After the successful testing phase, the project began regular power supply to the national grid on Shrawan 12, marking the start of its commercial operations.
Established with the goal of developing and operating hydropower projects, SuryaKund Hydro Electric Limited has a majority shareholding by API Power Company Limited.
The project had signed a Power Purchase Agreement with Nepal Electricity Authority on Chaitra 3, 2068.
The Environmental Preliminary Study (EIA) was approved by the Ministry of Energy on Ashoj 8, 2081, and the generation license was granted by the Department of Electricity Development on Ashoj 22, 2072.
Geographically, the project is situated in Dupcheshwar Rural Municipality, Nuwakot district, Bagmati Province.
The intake structure is at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters, and the powerhouse at 1,282 meters.
The powerhouse houses two Pelton turbine units, each with a capacity of 5.5 MW, producing a total of 11 MW. The diversion dam and auxiliary structures are designed to withstand a 100-year flood, estimated at 247 cubic meters per second.
Electricity generated by the project is connected to the Samundratar Substation in Nuwakot via a 6-kilometer-long 33 kV transmission line, feeding directly into the national grid.
The plant is expected to generate approximately 61.319 GWh annually, including 50.893 GWh during the rainy season and 10.425 GWh in the dry season.
The company is also advancing its initial public offering (IPO), which is currently in the pipeline with the Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON).
With the successful operation of this project, SuryaKunda Hydro Electric Limited is expected to contribute significantly to the electricity supply of Bagmati Province and the national grid.
