Sunil Thapa elected unopposed to National Assembly from Koshi

KATHMANDU: In the nomination process held on Wednesday for the National Assembly elections scheduled for Jan 25, Nepali Congress candidate Sunil Bahadur Thapa has been elected unopposed.

Thapa, who filed his candidacy as part of the alliance of Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, and Janata Samajbadi Party, faced no competition for the open category seat in Koshi Province.

The province had three candidates in total, with CPN-UML securing two seats due to its strong presence, while Congress secured one.

The CPN, led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, did not field a candidate in the open category, allowing Thapa to be elected unopposed, according to Election Officer Bhishma Raj Prasai.

Thapa’s proposers and supporters included Uddhav Thapa and Regina Bhattarai, respectively.

From UML, Roshani Meche, a former staffer in the Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s secretariat, filed her candidacy for the women’s seat, while Som Portel filed for the Dalit seat.

Meche’s proposer and supporter were Shobha Chemjong and Sirjana Rai, while Portel’s were Chhavi Chundal and Ekaraj Karki.

Meanwhile, across the country, nominations for the National Assembly elections continue, with Mahanta Thakur filing his candidacy from Madhesh Province on behalf of JSP-Nepal.
