KATHMANDU: Sugarcane farmers, pressing for the payment of last fiscal year 2081/82’s pending subsidy of Rs. 70 per quintal, staged another sit-in protest in Kathmandu on Friday.
The demonstration, led by the Sugarcane Producers Association Nepal, was held at Maitighar Mandala as part of their ongoing agitation.
Farmers have demanded immediate disbursement of the subsidy, inclusion of farmers in the sugarcane price determination process, and the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed on sugarcane.
Chanting slogans against the government for failing to address their concerns, the farmers vowed to continue their protest until their demands are fulfilled.
Participants from 13 districts have joined the movement in Kathmandu, warning of further escalation if the government remains indifferent.
