Speeding behind over half of Nepal’s road accidents in last month
Police statistics show that 2,294 road accidents occurred nationwide during the month, with 1,253 crashes linked to excessive speed.
KATHMANDU: More than half of the road accidents recorded across Nepal during the month of Baisakh were caused by overspeeding, according to Nepal Police data.
Police statistics show that 2,294 road accidents occurred nationwide during the month, with 1,253 crashes linked to excessive speed.
Driver negligence accounted for 137 accidents, while 133 incidents were caused by pedestrians crossing roads in haste.
Another 112 accidents were related to drunk driving and 46 to unnecessary overtaking.
The accidents claimed the lives of 239 people, including 158 men, 54 women and 27 children.
A total of 752 people sustained serious injuries, while 3,220 suffered minor injuries.
Traffic police also carried out 137,094 actions against traffic rule violators during the period, collecting Rs 118.27 million in revenue.
Altogether, 3,334 vehicles were involved in the reported accidents, with two-wheelers making up the largest share.
Police data further revealed that the highest number of accidents occurred between 6 pm and midnight, during which 859 crashes were recorded.
Another 850 accidents took place between noon and 6 pm, while 506 occurred between 6 am and noon. The fewest incidents, 78, were reported between midnight and 6 am.
Meanwhile, in the last 24 hours alone, road accidents in different parts of the country killed three people and injured 94 others. Police said two deaths were reported in Bagmati Province and one in the Kathmandu Valley.
