Social activist killed in motorcycle crash during police check

KATHMANDU: A motorcycle accident during a police vehicle inspection in Biratnagar claimed the life of a young social activist on Tuesday night.
The victim has been identified as 28-year-old Pushpakumar Chaudhary, a resident of Barju Rural Municipality-6 in Sunsari.
According to police, the incident occurred at around 8:20 p.m. near Doodhfarm Chowk in Biratnagar Metropolitan City-4, while a police team from the District Police Office, Morang, along with traffic police, was conducting a routine vehicle check.
Eyewitnesses reported that police had stopped a mini-truck (Province 1-02-001 K 5189) heading towards Nemuwa from Biratnagar for inspection.
At the same time, a motorcycle (Province 1-02-0046 P 6401), traveling at high speed from the same direction, crashed into the rear of the halted truck.
Chaudhary sustained critical injuries in the crash and was immediately rushed to Nobel Hospital in Biratnagar.
Despite efforts, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment, police confirmed.
Widely recognized as a committed social activist, Chaudhary’s untimely death has cast a shadow of grief over the local community.
Meanwhile, police have taken the mini-truck driver, identified as 31-year-old Santosh Kumar Acharya of Budhiganga Rural Municipality-1 in Morang, into custody for further investigation into the incident.
