KATHMANDU: Senior Nepali Congress leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has met party president Sher Bahadur Deuba, urging him to take proactive steps to resolve growing internal disputes and safeguard party unity.

Koirala visited Deuba’s residence in Maharajgunj on Thursday morning, where he warned that the party was facing a serious risk of fragmentation.

He appealed to Deuba to show flexibility and initiate a dialogue-driven solution to the ongoing crisis, according to party sources.

During the meeting, Koirala reportedly emphasized that “party unity is more important than individual leadership ambitions at this moment,” encouraging Deuba to play a responsible and unifying role.

The Nepali Congress has recently been embroiled in intense controversy over the issue of a special general convention. General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma have been demanding the convention, while Chief Secretary Krishna Prasad Paudel has opposed the move, stating that it has not been called in accordance with the party statute.

He has also urged leaders and cadres not to participate.

This dispute has effectively divided the party into two camps. The establishment faction has labeled the special convention process as illegitimate, while the dissident group has intensified pressure for a leadership change.

Dr. Koirala has previously been seen playing a mediator’s role in times of internal crisis, consistently advocating for unity within the party.
