KATHMANDU: As internal politics within the Nepali Congress intensify, Dr. Shekhar Koirala’s faction has convened an emergency meeting to chart its next course.

The gathering began Monday morning at Koirala’s contact office in Bishalnagar, Kathmandu, drawing a large turnout of senior leaders and central committee members of the faction.

The group, long critical of the party leadership, is deeply deliberating on its forthcoming political moves.

Prominent leaders attending the meeting include party Vice-Chair Dhanraj Gurung, Joint General Secretaries Badri Pandey and Jeevan Pariyar, along with other influential figures. The session also saw participation from Gandaki Province Speaker Shukraraj Sharma and district-level chairpersons.

Central to the discussions is how to address the demands and sentiments of delegates who have been mobilizing signatures for a special general convention.

According to a participant, while signatories have expressed frustration over alleged violations of party rules and procedures, the consensus remains that party unity must be preserved as the ultimate priority.

The meeting is expected to determine the faction’s next political direction. “There is agreement that pressure must be applied to the leadership, but it should not send a message of party division,” the participant added. Leaders are also weighing whether to actively participate in the ongoing convention process or to boycott it—a decision that remains under serious consideration.
