Severe cold disrupts daily life in Mahottari
Since Poush 4, harsh cold waves, biting winds, dense fog, and frost have affected not only residents but also livestock, poultry, and winter crops.
KATHMANDU: Mahottari district, including the headquarters of Jaleshwar and surrounding central, western, and southern areas, is experiencing severe disruption in daily life due to a sharp drop in temperatures over the past week.
Since Poush 4, harsh cold waves, biting winds, dense fog, and frost have affected not only residents but also livestock, poultry, and winter crops.
Although no human casualties have been reported this year, locals say daily routines in villages across the central, western, and southeastern parts of the district have become increasingly difficult.
Dr. Bikas Sah, chief of the Jaleshwar Provincial Hospital, stated that people are unable to carry out their regular activities, and cases of illness among children and the elderly are rising.
According to him, the hospital receives 150 to 200 patients daily due to cold-related ailments.
Farmers have reported damage to winter crops, pulses, and vegetables due to the intense cold.
Meanwhile, the movement of people in both urban and rural areas has declined, although sales of woolen clothes have increased in local markets, according to traders.
Private clinics, health centers, and the district hospital have also seen a surge in patients seeking treatment for cold-related issues.
In response, the District Disaster Management Committee has instructed all 15 local municipalities to remain prepared for potential emergencies.
Chief District Officer Indradev Yadav has urged the District Forest Office to ensure the availability of firewood at reasonable rates across municipalities and has requested local leaders to distribute firewood to protect residents.
The Mahottari District Administration has advised citizens to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel as temperatures continue to drop.
