KATHMANDU: Senegal clinched the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title after defeating hosts Morocco 1–0 in a tense and controversial final in Rabat on Sunday.

The match remained goalless at the end of regular time, forcing extra time to decide the winner.

In the fourth minute of extra time, Pape Gueye fired a powerful strike to give Senegal the crucial lead.

The goal proved to be the match-winner.

Controversy marked the closing stages of the game.

In second-half stoppage time, Morocco were awarded a penalty following a VAR review.

However, Senegal’s goalkeeper produced a brilliant save to deny Brahim Díaz, preserving his team’s advantage.

Earlier, Senegal had claimed a goal through Ismaïla Sarr, but the referee did not consult VAR, sparking protests from Senegalese players, who briefly walked off the pitch in frustration.

Tensions also spilled into the stands after the penalty decision, with some spectators attempting to break barriers amid heated scenes.

Despite the drama, Senegal held on to secure a historic AFCON triumph.
