KATHMANDU: Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed suddenly during a friendly match against Ukraine in Odense, prompting immediate medical attention and the abandonment of the game.

The incident occurred in the 65th minute when Eriksen unexpectedly fell on the pitch. The match was halted as medical staff rushed to assist him, and he was later taken to hospital for further evaluation. According to the Danish Football Association, his condition is now stable.

Team doctor Morten Boesen confirmed that Eriksen briefly lost consciousness but regained awareness quickly and was able to walk off the field on his own after initial treatment. “Christian is fine now. We were able to speak with him immediately. Further tests at the hospital will determine the cause,” he said.

Eriksen has a history of cardiac-related complications after collapsing during Euro 2020 against Finland in 2021, when he suffered a cardiac arrest. Following that incident, he was fitted with an ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) before making a remarkable return to professional football.

Players from both teams surrounded Eriksen during the incident, allowing medical staff to provide emergency care, while visibly emotional scenes unfolded on the pitch. Denmark captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg described the moment as a “huge shock” for everyone involved.

Denmark head coach Brian Riemer confirmed that Eriksen is safe and that the team’s focus remains entirely on his recovery. He is currently under medical supervision in hospital, where further examinations are ongoing.
