The meeting was chaired by Acting Chief Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari and attended by the Home Secretary along with the heads of all four major security agencies.
KATHMANDU: A high-level election security committee convened at the Election Commission to conduct a detailed review of preparations and recent unrest across the country ahead of the upcoming elections.
The meeting was chaired by Acting Chief Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari and attended by the Home Secretary along with the heads of all four major security agencies.
The committee assessed the overall security situation nationwide and discussed measures to bolster security arrangements in sensitive areas.
Particular attention was given to recent clashes and disturbances in Rautahat and Birgunj in the Madhesh Province.
In Rautahat, disputes between different groups have escalated into violent confrontations, while in Birgunj stone-pelting and protests have created a tense environment, presenting new challenges for election security.
Considering the risk these tensions pose to the electoral environment, the commission focused discussions on revising security strategies.
Areas experiencing communal and political conflicts have been classified as highly sensitive, and plans are underway to deploy additional security forces.
Security agencies have been directed to promptly control local disputes and bring elements attempting to disrupt the election process within the framework of the law.
The meeting is expected to announce concrete measures, including increasing the presence of security forces in border and conflict-prone districts and closely monitoring misleading information spreading on social media.
