KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has issued a show-cause order in response to a habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of UML Vice Chairman and former Finance Minister Bishnu Paudel.

Hearing the petition filed by Paudel’s wife, Domaya Paudel, a single bench of Justice Shrikant Paudel on Thursday ordered the concerned authorities to submit a written explanation.

The petition claims that Paudel was arrested without sufficient evidence, alleging political retaliation and demanding his immediate release.

Paudel was arrested from Surkhet on Monday under an emergency arrest warrant. Subsequently, the Special Court approved the warrant and permitted authorities to keep him in custody for seven days for further investigation.

The Supreme Court has now sought clarification from the respondents in the case during its preliminary hearing.
