KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court is set to hear a petition challenging the government’s decision to commute the sentence of Resham Chaudhary, patron of the Nagrik Unmukti Party.

The hearing will be conducted by a bench comprising Justices Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma and Sunil Kumar Pokhrel.

Chaudhary was released from prison on 15 Jestha 2080, following a presidential pardon for 19 convicts recommended by the government on the occasion of Republic Day.

The petition was filed on May 29, 2023, by Sharada Kadayat, wife of Inspector Keshav Bohara, who was killed in the Tikapur incident, opposing the pardon granted to Chaudhary.

Earlier, on 23 Jestha, a single-judge bench led by Justice Prakashman Singh Raut had sought a written explanation from the government regarding the rationale for Chaudhary’s pardon.

Despite multiple scheduled hearings since then, the case had not been heard.

Chaudhary was sentenced to life imprisonment by three levels of courts for his role in the violent Tikapur incident on 7 Bhadra 2072, during the Tharuhat movement, in which seven security personnel, including SSP Laxman Neupane, and one minor were killed.
