Samba undergoes successful knee surgery
Nepal captain begins rehabilitation after ACL injury; expected to be sidelined for up to a year
KATHMANDU: Nepal women’s national football team captain Sabitra Bhandari, popularly known as “Samba,” has successfully undergone knee surgery in New Zealand.
Sharing an update on Wednesday via social media, Bhandari confirmed that the procedure was completed in Auckland under the supervision of Dr. Simon and his medical team. She added that her rehabilitation process will now begin under medical guidance.
Bhandari sustained the injury around three months ago while playing for Wellington Phoenix FC Women in a match against Brisbane Roar FC Women. The incident occurred late in the second half when she collided with opposition goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln while contesting for the ball, injuring her right knee.
Subsequent MRI scans confirmed a tear in her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) graft, ruling her out of action for an estimated 9 to 12 months.
Following the injury, Bhandari had appealed for financial assistance to cover her treatment costs after not receiving the expected support from the All Nepal Football Association.
Her call was met with overwhelming support from fans at home and abroad.
Within less than 24 hours, nearly NPR 15 million was raised. Over Rs 10 million was collected through Nepali bank accounts, while approximately Rs 4.5 million (NZD 52,000) came through international platforms.
She later announced the closure of the fundraising campaign after reaching the required amount.
Although there were initial plans for treatment at Aspetar Hospital, logistical challenges in the Gulf region led to the decision to proceed with surgery in New Zealand.
Bhandari has stated that she intends to continue her rehabilitation at Aspetar once conditions allow.
She also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Nepali community in Wellington and Auckland, her club Wellington Phoenix, and her management team for their unwavering support during this difficult period.
Bhandari emphasized that her full focus is now on recovery and making a strong comeback.
This marks the second major ACL injury of her career, having previously undergone surgery on the same knee four years ago in Qatar before returning to the field.
Bhandari remains Nepal’s all-time leading international goal scorer.
