KATHMANDU: Senior leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), Balendra Shah, has pledged to address Dharan’s long-standing drinking water problem.

Speaking at an election rally in Itahari on Tuesday, Shah said that although a Detailed Project Report (DPR) exists for bringing water from the Koshi River to Dharan, previous efforts had stalled.

He promised that RSP would take the lead in implementing the project.

“Supplying water from Koshi to Dharan via mechanical lifting will cost around Rs 5–6 billion. Perhaps the current representatives and their parties never reached the government, but now RSP will,” Shah stated, asserting the party’s commitment to solving the city’s water crisis.

Shah also highlighted the historical and tourism potential of the country, noting that many Nepalis are unaware that the Barahkshetra is one of the world’s first pilgrimage sites. “RSP wants to be the party that raises awareness about such heritage sites,” he said.

Reflecting on his travels around Udayapur, Shah suggested that parts of the district could be developed to rival tourist destinations like Bali and the Maldives.

On sports, Shah criticized the state for neglecting football development, despite 60–70% of the nation’s players originating from the eastern region. “RSP wants to be the party that fosters football development across the country,” he added.
