KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Asim Shah has resigned from his position in protest against the government’s handling of the ongoing Gen Z movement.

In his resignation statement, Shah criticized the administration for resorting to violence against peaceful demonstrators, calling it “inhumane” and a blatant violation of citizens’ rights.

He stated, “The government’s use of gunfire against a peaceful movement goes against my conscience and my responsibility to the people. For this reason, I have decided to relinquish my parliamentary seat.”

Shah highlighted that he has repeatedly raised the voices of the youth in parliament, but alleged that those in power refused to listen. “The lives of children are more important than the security of a building. The killings committed to protect the parliament are crimes perpetrated by the government itself,” he added.

In his resignation letter, Shah emphasized that remaining silent or tacitly supporting flawed policies would betray his generation, his constituents, and the country’s future. “For me, being a parliamentarian is not about the position; it is about representing the voice of the people. But when that voice is suppressed and the government retreats from its commitments to elected representatives, I cannot continue in such a parliament,” he wrote.

Shah concluded by declaring his commitment to fight alongside the Gen Z generation, citizens, and the cause of truth—not from inside the parliamentary walls, but from the streets.
