KATHMANDU: A government study has revealed that public institutions alone suffered losses worth NPR 956.2 million during the recent Gen Z movement.

According to a report prepared by a government task force assigned to assess damages, the total loss in public institutions—including state-owned and managed properties—amounted to Rs 956.2 million.

Of this, building-related damages accounted for 43.1%, vehicles 16.1%, other physical assets 37.4%, and miscellaneous items 3.3%.

The report indicates that 26 buildings under the central government and 3 under provincial authorities were damaged.

Total building-related losses amounted to Rs 412.4 million, while approximately 109 government vehicles were damaged, resulting in losses of around Rs 143.6 million.

The study also highlighted extensive damage in the private and community sectors.

Private businesses and households incurred total losses of Rs 3.35487 billion, while community and other institutions suffered Rs 597.17 million in damages.

Within the private sector, permanent and temporary properties bore the brunt, with losses totaling Rs 2.749303 billion, accounting for 69.8% of the total private and community sector losses.

Among these, damage to buildings due to arson and vandalism was the highest at 45.2%, followed by damage to other physical assets at 27.4%, temporary and other private property at 21.7%, and vehicles at 3.4%.

Overall, the study notes that the heaviest losses were in buildings and permanent properties, which directly impacted production, services, and employment sectors.
