KATHMANDU: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) lawmaker Buddhi Man Tamang has urged the government to introduce a clear and predictable system for appointing the Inspector General of Police (IGP), similar to that of the Chief of Army Staff.

Speaking at the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee meeting held on Wednesday at Singha Durbar, Tamang emphasized the need for transparency in the IGP selection process. The committee was holding a theoretical discussion on the bill to amend the Nepal Police Act.

Tamang stated that just as the successor of the Chief of Army Staff is known well in advance, the same level of clarity should be established for the Nepal Police. He proposed that the bill should include provisions guaranteeing promotion to IGP based on clear merit-based criteria.

“There should be assurance that someone who has served as AIG without being involved in any controversy, has not received any clarification notice, or been implicated in any case, will be eligible for promotion to IGP,” said Tamang.

He further argued that deserving officers who have served without blemish should be able to confidently expect their promotion. “It should be like in the army, where it’s generally known who the next Chief will be, barring any exceptional circumstances. The IGP position should be similarly predictable,” he added.

Tamang also thanked the Home Minister for bringing the bill forward, calling it relevant to the current time and situation, and acknowledged the effort to overcome obstacles in drafting it.
