KATHMANDU: Mumbai Indians pulled off a stunning run chase to defeat Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets in their second match of the Indian Premier League 2026 season at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday night.

Chasing a daunting target of 221, Mumbai reached 222 for 4 in just 19.1 overs, marking their highest successful run chase in IPL history.

A dominant opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton laid the foundation for the victory.

The duo added 148 runs for the first wicket in just 71 balls, putting KKR under early pressure.

Rohit struck a fluent 78 off 38 balls, smashing six sixes and six fours, while Rickelton delivered a spectacular 81 off 43 balls, including eight sixes and four boundaries.

Despite Rohit’s dismissal, Mumbai maintained control of the chase. Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten on 18 off 11 balls, as the team cruised to victory, with Naman Dhir hitting the winning runs.

Earlier, after being put in to bat, Kolkata posted a strong total of 220 for 4 in their 20 overs. Ajinkya Rahane top-scored with 67 off 40 balls, while Angkrish Raghuvanshi added a quick 51 from 29 deliveries.

For Mumbai, Shardul Thakur was the standout bowler, claiming three wickets.

KKR’s bowling attack, however, failed to defend the total, with Vaibhav Arora, Blessing Muzarabani, Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine unable to make a significant impact.

The victory also marked a milestone for Mumbai, as it was their first successful chase of a 220-plus target in IPL history and their first opening win of a season since 2012.
