KATHMANDU: CPN (Maoist Centre) lawmaker Rekha Sharma has strongly objected to the government’s reported move to legalize polygamy through an amendment to the Civil Code 2074.

Speaking during Tuesday’s session of the House of Representatives, Sharma criticized the Ministry of Law’s preparations to amend Section 175 of the Civil Code, stating that it contradicts constitutional provisions on women’s rights and international treaties Nepal is party to.

“This attempt to give legal recognition to polygamy undermines the achievements gained through the People’s War, the People’s Movement, and decades of women’s struggles,” she said, calling it a “major regressive step.”

Sharma urged the government not to proceed with the proposed regressive bill, making it clear that such a move would not be accepted.
