KATHMANDU: Eight out of nine bodies recovered from the devastating flood that struck Rasuwa on Tuesday have been brought to Kathmandu and placed at the Teaching Hospital in Maharajgunj.
According to Nepal Police spokesperson and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Binod Ghimire, only one of the victims has been identified so far.
That body, belonging to Assistant Sub-Inspector Lal Bahadur Shrestha, was found on the banks of the Trishuli River in Chitwan and has already been handed over to the family and cremated.
The remaining bodies have not yet been identified, and five are in a condition suitable for possible identification.
The other four consist of dismembered human parts, which require DNA testing for confirmation, police said.
Nineteen individuals are still reported missing from the Rasuwa flood.
Among them are two police officers, six Chinese nationals, and eleven civilians.
Authorities are working to determine whether the recovered remains belong to the listed missing persons.
The flood caused extensive destruction, sweeping away the Nepal-China friendship bridge, 24 containers, 6 trucks, and 35 electric vehicles.
The road from Dhunche to Timure has also been blocked, and significant damage has been reported at the Rasuwa Customs Yard and the dam of Rasuwgadhi Hydropower.
Search and rescue operations are ongoing across riverbanks in several districts, and stranded individuals in affected areas of Rasuwa are still being rescued, according to SSP Sanjay Singh Thapa, spokesperson of the Bagmati Province Police Office.
