KATHMANDU: A protest was held at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu, where activists and citizens from across the country gathered to denounce caste-based discrimination, structural oppression, and a series of caste-related killings.

Organized under the coordination of the Dalit Liberation Front Nepal’s First National Convention Organizing Committee, the demonstration brought together oppressed communities, intellectuals, and human rights defenders calling for an end to entrenched caste hierarchy and related violence.

The protest was held as part of a declared “resistance day” marking the memory of Nawaraj BK and five others who were killed six years ago in the Rukum Soti incident linked to an inter-caste love relationship. Demonstrators described the case as a symbol of ongoing injustice and caste-based brutality in society.

Chanting slogans and carrying placards, participants questioned the state of equality in the country, arguing that democratic values remain incomplete as long as caste violence persists.

They expressed anger over continued social exclusion and discrimination faced by Dalit communities.

The rally also presented a set of demands, including the provision of cultivable land for landless Dalits, free education with scholarships for Dalit students, and the formation of a high-level independent commission to investigate caste-related killings and ensure justice for victims.

Organizers emphasized that without structural reform and accountability, the promise of democracy remains unfulfilled for marginalized communities.
