Proposed Justice Meghraj Pokharel pledges judicial independence

KATHMANDU: Proposed Supreme Court Judge Meghraj Pokharel has firmly pledged not to succumb to any form of pressure, temptation, or threats that could undermine the independence and impartiality of the judiciary.
Emphasizing that judges must remain neutral and stand solely for the Constitution, law, and justice, Pokharel made these commitments during his detailed presentation before the Parliamentary Hearing Committee at Singha Durbar on Sunday.
Clarifying the distinct roles between legal practitioners and judges, Pokharel stated that while lawyers must advocate for one side, judges are expected to have no affiliations or biases.
He expressed his determination to completely transform his past role, should he be appointed as a judge, by unwaveringly standing for justice and the rule of law.
“If appointed as a judge, I will leave behind my previous role and fully dedicate myself to upholding the Constitution, law, and justice,” he said. “Judges must be free from all external influences to deliver independent and impartial justice.”
Pokharel highlighted the inevitability of pressures, inducements, and threats faced by the judiciary but stressed that judges must rise above these challenges to make fair decisions. He further underlined the necessity of maintaining the judiciary’s independent role vis-à-vis the executive and legislative branches.
Reiterating the importance of all state organs operating within constitutional limits, Pokharel warned that any attempt to breach constitutional boundaries could lead to political deadlock.
He urged all to respect their duties and boundaries to ensure the establishment of the rule of law in the country.
