KATHMANDU: A resolution proposal aimed at ensuring citizens’ easy access to clean drinking water and establishing a domestic bleaching powder industry was tabled in the National Assembly on Thursday.

Presenting the proposal, lawmaker Jag Prasad Sharma highlighted the urgent need for safe drinking water across Nepal, stating that many communities are still forced to drink contaminated water due to the unavailability of bleaching powder.

He warned that such unsafe water continues to spread diseases like diarrhea, posing a serious risk to public health.

“Clean water is essential for all living beings. The consumption of contaminated water due to the lack of bleaching powder increases the threat of waterborne diseases, which can even lead to preventable deaths,” Sharma said.

Sharma emphasized that the core of the proposal is to initiate the production of bleaching powder within Nepal.

According to experts, such a factory can be established with minimal investment and could also contribute to employment generation.

“There is a growing need for a domestic bleaching powder plant to ensure public health. Even a small-scale operation can create jobs and help provide safe water to citizens,” he added.

The resolution received strong backing from fellow lawmakers Krishna Bahadur Rokaya, Gopi Bahadur Sarki Achhami, Bhagwati Neupane, Madan Kumari Shah Garima, and Mohammad Khalid.
