KATHMANDU: The birth anniversary of Prithvi Narayan Shah and National Unity Day are being celebrated in the federal capital Kathmandu.
The 304th Prithvi Jayanti was celebrated by garlanding the statue of Prithvi Narayan Shah at the west gate of Singha Durbar on Sunday morning.
The celebrations began in the morning with a wreath-laying ceremony at the statue of Prithvi Narayan Shah located at the western gate of Singha Durbar.
President Ram Chandra Poudel paid floral tributes to the statue, joined by the Vice President, the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice, cabinet ministers, senior government officials, and distinguished personalities from various walks of life.
Prithvi Jayanti is observed every year on Poush 27 with special programs in Kathmandu and across the country to honor the legacy of the nation’s unifier.
Prithvi Narayan Shah was born on Poush 27, 1779 BS, in Gorkha to King Nara Bhupal Shah and Queen Kaushalyawati.
He ascended the throne in 1799 BS, at a time when the region that is now Nepal was divided into 52 small principalities.
After becoming king, Prithvi Narayan Shah launched a unification campaign that successfully expanded Nepal’s territory from the Tista River in the east to the Chepe River in the west.
Following his death, his successors continued this expansion, extending the western boundary of the Nepali state as far as Kangara Fort.
National Unity Day serves as a reminder of Prithvi Narayan Shah’s vision of a unified, sovereign, and independent Nepal, and his enduring contribution to the nation’s history and identity.
