KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel has called for urgent efforts to preserve the natural integrity of Mount Everest and protect the fragile Himalayan environment, emphasizing its importance as Nepal’s national pride and a priceless global heritage.

Speaking at a special program held on the eve of International Everest Day (May 29) in the presence of climbers from around the world, President Paudel stressed that Everest is not only a geographical identity of Nepal but also a symbol of national prestige and a vital pillar for sustainable tourism-driven economic growth.

He highlighted that responsible conservation and balanced utilization of the Everest region are essential to ensure long-term benefits for Nepal’s tourism sector and overall economy.

The President also underscored the importance of continued international dialogue and cooperation on Himalayan issues, noting the value of such gatherings in addressing shared environmental concerns.

Expressing concern over rising global temperatures and the accelerating impacts of climate change, President Paudel warned that the Himalayas are facing increasing environmental stress.

He pointed to growing pollution and waste generated by mountaineering activities as major challenges that require immediate attention.

“These issues, including the effects of climate change and increasing waste in mountaineering areas, have become serious challenges,” he said, calling for stronger cooperation to make Everest safer, more sustainable, and environmentally friendly while preserving its biodiversity.

Recalling the historic 1953 ascent by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary, the President paid tribute to pioneering climbers and the Sherpa community for their extraordinary contribution in placing Nepal on the global mountaineering map.

He reaffirmed that sustainable Himalayan tourism and responsible mountaineering are now essential priorities, expressing confidence that insights shared during such events will contribute to preserving the enduring vitality of Everest and the Himalayan ecosystem.
