KATHMANDU: Renowned singer and actor Prashant Tamang passed away at the age of 43 on Sunday morning in Delhi due to a cardiac arrest.

Following his death, his body was flown to his hometown Alubari, Darjeeling, where he was cremated on Tuesday according to Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

The funeral was attended by his wife, Martha Eli, and hundreds of Nepali-speaking fans and well-wishers.

Thousands gathered at Darjeeling’s central square to pay their respects, while a musical group performed some of his most popular songs in tribute.

Prashant’s sudden passing drew condolences from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

In a heartfelt letter to Martha Eli, Prime Minister Modi described Tamang’s death as an “irreparable loss” and praised his exceptional contribution to music and cinema.

Modi noted that Prashant’s heartfelt singing and remarkable acting had touched the lives of millions across India, inspiring countless young people to dream big and work hard.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also expressed grief on social media, highlighting Prashant’s melodious voice, inspiring journey, and the special bond he had shared with Bengal during his interactions with the Kolkata Police.

Prashant Tamang was widely known for hit songs like “Man Saili,” “Jaaula Relai Ma Sarar,” “Sirima Siri Batasai Challyo,” “Arey Kanyam,” “Rato Rani,” and “Asare Mahina Ma.”

He also starred in successful films including “Gorkha Paltan” and “Pardeshi”, and his most recent appearance was in “Ladai Pahichanko.”
