KATHMANDU: Medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai has been released on bail under a reporting obligation, following an order from the District Government Attorney’s Office in Kathmandu.

According to Central Cyber Bureau Superintendent of Police Deepak Raj Awasthi, Prasai was freed on hajiri jamani (attendance-based bail), which requires him to report as instructed by authorities.

Police arrested Prasai on Friday from the Chalnakhel area of Dakshinkali Municipality while he was traveling from Kathmandu to Birgunj in Parsa district.

In recent months, Prasai has drawn attention for a series of public statements advocating that Nepal should first be declared a Hindu state before holding elections.

During a visit to Chitwan on Feb 2, he claimed that elections would not take place unless the monarchy is reinstated.

Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the investigation.
