KATHMANDU: Chair of the CPN (Maoist Centre) and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has warned of a possible new wave of revolt in Nepal, citing continued conspiracies aimed at discrediting the Maoist movement by labeling it responsible for the deaths of 17,000 people during the armed conflict.
Speaking at a program organized at the party’s central office in Parisdanda on Sunday, Prachanda admitted that the party failed to properly honor the martyrs of the conflict and address the pain and suffering of their families. “We still hear people saying ‘17,000 killed’ to defame us. There are ongoing efforts to create divisions within our party,” he stated.
Reflecting on the past, Prachanda acknowledged shortcomings: “We made mistakes in giving due respect to our great martyrs. We didn’t reach out to the martyr families and our class communities as closely as we should have. There were weaknesses in our ideological and political commitments.”
He emphasized that the party has now resolved to reconnect with its class base, the families of the martyrs and disappeared, and its original political ideals. “We are now moving forward with a renewed commitment to our class, to the families of the martyrs and disappeared, and to our ideological goals,” he said.
Prachanda further alleged that reactionary forces are conspiring to weaken the Maoist party, but asserted that the party is determined to move forward by remembering the dreams of the martyrs. “There are signs of new political polarization in Nepal. We are preparing to move ahead once again with the belief that a new revolution and uprising will emerge,” he declared.
