KATHMANDU: Senior leader Ishwar Pokharel faced a major setback at the 11th National Convention of the CPN-UML, losing both the party chair and central committee member elections.

In the chairperson race, KP Sharma Oli secured a decisive victory with 1,663 votes, while Pokharel managed only 564 votes. Out of 2,263 eligible voters, 2,227 cast their ballots.

Under party rules, candidates for top positions automatically contest the open central committee seats.

Pokharel, despite receiving more votes than Oli in this category, fell short of the required number and failed to secure a seat, garnering 1,088 votes compared to Oli’s 979.

A long-time senior figure in the party, Pokharel had challenged Oli for the chairpersonship, but most candidates from his panel were defeated.

After the results, Pokharel took to social media, expressing his continued commitment to UML’s initiatives and congratulating the newly elected leadership, wishing them a successful term.
