KATHMANDU: Pokhara Metropolitan City has stepped up its campaign to remove unauthorized parking from sidewalks in the New Road area, aiming to ensure safer and smoother pedestrian movement.

The operation focuses on wards 8 and 9 of the New Road corridor, where authorities have begun clearing footpaths that were being illegally used for vehicle parking.

According to Municipal Police Inspector Purushottam Thapa, sidewalks are strictly designated for pedestrians, and parking vehicles there has been causing obstruction and increasing the risk of accidents.

He clarified that vehicle owners must park only in designated parking areas assigned by the metropolitan city and manage their vehicles accordingly in other zones.

Prior to the enforcement drive, the city conducted three consecutive days of public announcements using loudspeakers from Friday to Sunday to inform residents about the campaign.

Enforcement actions began on Monday after the awareness period ended. On the first day alone, eight motorcycles parked on sidewalks were seized by municipal police.

Inspector Thapa further stated that strict enforcement will continue from Tuesday onwards. He warned that vehicles found parked on sidewalks in the future will not be released immediately and will be handed over to the District Traffic Police Office for legal action under applicable regulations.

The metropolis has urged all vehicle owners and residents to cooperate with the initiative, emphasizing that the campaign is intended to reduce road congestion and minimize the risk of accidents by keeping pedestrian walkways clear.
