Pashupati bans meat, alcohol during Balachaturdashi
The move aims to maintain religious sanctity, cultural norms, and public safety during the sacred observance.
KATHMANDU: Ahead of Balachaturdashi (Shatavijaropan) festival, local authorities have imposed a strict ban on the production, sale, distribution, storage, and consumption of meat, alcohol, and intoxicants in and around the Pashupatinath temple area.
The decision, announced by Chief District Officer of Kathmandu, Ishwar Raj Poudel, will be in effect for three days starting today, coinciding with the festival on Mangsir 3 (Nov 19).
The move aims to maintain religious sanctity, cultural norms, and public safety during the sacred observance.
Under Section 6, Subsection (3) of the Local Administration Act 2028, strict enforcement measures have been put in place, with violations subject to legal action.
Authorities have designated four restricted zones:

East: Tilganga and Gujeshwari areas

West: Gaushala, Mitra Park, and Chakrapath Road

North: Mitra Park, Umakunda, Gaurighat, and Gujeshwari Road

South: Gaushala, Tilganga, and Chakrapath Road
The administration has warned that any breach of the ban will be dealt with under the prevailing laws, ensuring the festival’s solemnity is preserved.
