Parliament building completion doubtful despite deadline extension
During an inspection of the ongoing project, parliamentary committee members noted that the government has extended the deadline for the project to the 16th of Poush, 2082 BS through the 14th amendment of the plan.
KATHMANDU: Members of the parliamentary committee expressed concerns on Monday that the construction of the new parliament building is unlikely to be completed even by the recently extended deadline.
During an inspection of the ongoing project, parliamentary committee members noted that the government has extended the deadline for the project to the 16th of Poush, 2082 BS through the 14th amendment of the plan.
However, with only about 5 percent of the finishing work completed, lawmakers believe much more time will be needed to complete the building.
The Public Policy and Subordinate Legislation Committee under the National Assembly, which is overseeing the monitoring process, reported that a significant amount of work remains unfinished.
Committee chairperson Maya Prasad Sharma expressed doubts about the possibility of completing the work on time and warned the construction company against expecting any further deadline extensions. She also accused the company of significant delays in progress.
“The deadline has been extended until Poush 16, but will the work be completed by then? Much work is still pending. Finishing work is progressing slowly, and a lot remains to be done. We emphasized that there should be no further extensions. Although work is progressing gradually, there is considerable delay,” Sharma said.
MP Gomadevi Timalsina of the CPN (Unified Socialist) also criticized the slow progress, stating that despite repeated deadline extensions, the work remains unsatisfactory. She expressed doubts about the timely completion of the building.
“We have come multiple times to inspect and observe the construction. However, the progress is not satisfactory. It does not seem like the building will be completed by Poush 16,” Timalsina said.
MP Narbahadur Bisht of the CPN (Maoist Centre) estimated that it may take another two years to complete the project. He said that only 5 percent of the finishing work has been done.
“Upon inspection, we found that only 5 percent of the finishing work is complete. It doesn’t look like it will be finished soon. It may take about two more years,” Bisht added.
