Over 1,400 detained in Kathmandu ‘sweep operation’ in Jestha

KATHMANDU: The District Police Range Kathmandu has detained and taken action against 1,410 individuals during a month-long “sweep operation” conducted across various parts of Kathmandu in the month of Jestha.

According to Police Spokesperson and Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, the operation led to the detention of 199 women, 1,218 men, and three others as part of intensified efforts to curb crime and maintain public order in the capital.

During the campaign, police also deported 21 foreign women from Uganda, Vietnam, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Kenya who were found involved in activities causing harassment to domestic and foreign visitors in the Thamel area.

A total of 1,160 cases were registered in Jestha, including 257 serious and heinous crimes, 51 cases related to women, children, and senior citizens, 494 economic crimes, and 358 other offenses.

In ongoing cases, 1,004 accused individuals—122 women and 882 men—were arrested during the same period.

In addition, Kathmandu Police recorded 309 sit-in protests, 77 demonstrations, six torch rallies, four relay hunger strikes, and three corner meetings, totaling 434 public programs in Jestha. More than 10,000 police personnel were deployed to manage these activities.

Security forces also seized goods worth Rs 2,399,000, including green peas, coal, sunglasses, biscuits, mobile phones, and energy drinks linked to customs evasion and smuggling.

For public safety operations, including mobile patrols, checkpoint monitoring, foot patrols, motorcycle patrols, duty supervision, and Special Response Patrol (SRP), a total of 67,949 police deployments were carried out during the month.
