KATHMANDU: Lawmaker Lalbir Chaudhary of the Nagarik Unmukti Party has demanded a clear explanation from the government regarding the recent arrest of former MP Resham Chaudhary.

Speaking during Monday’s session of the House of Representatives, Chaudhary warned that if Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal or Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane fail to respond by Tuesday, the party will be compelled to withdraw from the ruling coalition.

“If the Prime Minister or Home Minister does not provide a response by tomorrow, we will have no option but to exit the government,” said MP Chaudhary, who is also Resham Chaudhary’s father.

Nagarik Unmukti Party is a coalition partner in the current government, with one of its leaders serving as a state minister.

The arrest of Resham Chaudhary on Baisakh 17 was reportedly based on a letter from Mahiman Singh Bista, an officer at the Supreme Court’s case management division. Chaudhary was taken into custody from Kamaladi and transferred directly to Dillibazar Prison.

MP Lalbir Chaudhary expressed outrage over what he called an “abduction-style” arrest, claiming Resham was suddenly detained and imprisoned without due process.

He further alleged that the letter used as the basis for the arrest was fake, arguing that Resham’s release just a few hours later proved its inauthenticity.

The arrest occurred on the same day that Nagarik Unmukti Party and Janamat Party were scheduled to announce a political unification, raising further suspicions among party members.
