KATHMANDU: A Nepali-origin American police officer has been killed in the line of duty following a shooting in the US state of Georgia.

Officer Pradeep Tamang, 25, of the Gwinnett County Police Department, died from gunshot wounds sustained during an on-duty incident early Sunday morning (local time) in Gwinnett County.

Another officer was seriously injured in the same attack.

According to the Gwinnett County Police Department, the incident occurred at around 7:30 am on East Park Place Boulevard, where a police team had responded to investigate a fraud-related complaint.

While officers, including Tamang, were conducting the inquiry, a 35-year-old suspect, Kevin Andrews, allegedly opened fire on them without warning.

Officer Tamang and Master Police Officer David M. Reed were both critically injured in the shooting and rushed for medical treatment. Police later confirmed that Officer Tamang succumbed to his injuries, while Officer Reed remains hospitalized in serious condition.

The suspect, Andrews, was also injured during a return fire by police and has been taken into custody.

The incident remains under investigation.

Officer Tamang had joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in July 2024.

He graduated from the Police Academy in May 2025, as part of the 121st batch, and had recently begun field duty.

Officer Reed, who was wounded in the attack, has served with the department since 2015 and is regarded as a senior and experienced officer.
