KATHMANDU: The Government of Nepal is set to observe the 28th Earthquake Safety Day on Magh 2 (Jan 16), under the theme: “Preparedness of All Levels of Government and Citizens: The Responsibility for a Resilient Nepal.”

The day commemorates the devastating earthquake of 1990 BS, which struck at 2:24 AM.

Since 2055 BS, the Ministry of Home Affairs has coordinated annual events to raise awareness on earthquake safety.

Ravindra Bohara, Director General of the Department of Urban Development and Building Construction, said offices under the department have been instructed to organize awareness programs to mark the occasion.

He emphasized that most losses during earthquakes occur due to weak buildings or structures, which hinder the country’s overall development.

Bohara highlighted the importance of constructing earthquake-resistant buildings in accordance with the National Building Code and ensuring preparedness for post-earthquake situations, including rapid search and rescue operations, trained personnel, and immediate relief measures.

He noted that various agencies continuously engage in risk reduction and post-earthquake recovery activities.
