KATHMANDU: Cricket Association Nepal (CAN) Secretary Paras Khadka has said the national cricket team is moving forward with a clear objective of winning a medal at the Asian Games, highlighting strong recent form and preparation as key reasons for optimism.

Speaking at a farewell programme held on the eve of the team’s qualification campaign, Khadka noted that Nepal is now a strong contender based on its current momentum.

He stressed that with cricket set to be included in the 2028 Olympics, the significance of the Asian Games has further increased.

Recalling Nepal’s progress since cricket’s inclusion in the Asian Games in 2010, Khadka said the team must now aim to move beyond qualification stages and firmly target a podium finish.

He also warned against underestimating any opponent in the T20 format, calling the competition highly unpredictable and competitive.

“We were very close to winning a medal in the past. This qualification campaign is a crucial step towards that goal. Any team can beat another in T20 cricket, so we are fully focused,” Khadka said.

Head coach Stuart Law also expressed confidence in the squad, stating that players from both the national and ‘A’ teams have been playing consistently in recent weeks and are in strong morale. He added that the team has recently intensified its focus on T20 preparations.

“We are not going there just to participate, but to win,” Law said, describing the tournament in Japan as an important opportunity to understand playing conditions and gain experience, alongside an upcoming tour of Singapore.

Captain Dipendra Singh Airee said the team environment is highly positive and preparations have been effective, expressing confidence in strong results in the upcoming matches.

Nepal will be led by skipper Dipendra Singh Airee, with a squad featuring Rohit Paudel, Kushal Bhurtel, Aasif Sheikh, Kushal Malla, Sandeep Lamichhane, Karan KC, Sompal Kami, Sundeep Jora, Lokesh Bam, Sher Malla, Nandan Yadav, and Shahab Alam. Kushal Malla has made a return to the squad.
