KATHMANDU: Minister for Forests and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, announced that the Government of Nepal has given special priority to climate-friendly and environmentally sustainable initiatives in the upcoming fiscal year 2082/83 budget.

Speaking at a program held in Kathmandu, Minister Thakuri shared that a two-year transparency report — covering Nepal’s carbon emissions and other environmental metrics — is in its final stage of completion.

He stated that under the federal structure, the new budget program will strongly support climate-resilient campaigns operated through federal, provincial, and local governments. “This integrated approach will strengthen Nepal’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection,” he added.

Minister Thakuri further informed that the final draft of the Carbon Regulation 2082 is being prepared with the aim of monetizing Nepal’s stored carbon by trading it in the international market, thereby bringing economic benefits to the country.

Highlighting Nepal’s role in global climate discourse, the Minister emphasized the significance of the upcoming Sagarmatha Dialogue, scheduled for May 16–18. He said the event will focus on climate change, mountains, and the future of humanity. “This will be a major platform to inform the global community about the climate crisis affecting mountain regions,” he noted.

He assured that the Government of Nepal is making extensive preparations to host the event in a grand and dignified manner, treating it as a nationally significant occasion.

Minister Thakuri warned that the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly severe. He stressed that while Nepal is not a major contributor to global emissions, it continues to bear the brunt of the climate crisis.
