Nepal urges citizens to avoid Iran, leave if already there amid escalating protests
Nepalis currently residing in Iran for work or other purposes were also urged to consider returning home as soon as possible.
KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal has issued an urgent travel advisory for Nepali citizens amid escalating protests in Iran. Citizens planning to travel to Iran are strongly advised to defer their plans until the situation stabilizes, while those currently residing or working in the country are urged to leave at the earliest opportunity through any available means.
The Ministry emphasized that Nepali nationals in Iran should keep all essential travel documents, including passports and identity cards, ready to facilitate an emergency exit if necessary. Citizens are also advised to refer to the Ministry’s Travel Advisory dated 13 January 2026 for detailed guidance.
For assistance and coordination, Nepali citizens can contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu or the Embassy of Nepal in Doha.
The advisory comes as widespread protests, initially sparked by rising inflation, currency devaluation, and dissatisfaction with government economic policies, have swept across Iran since 28 December. Reports indicate that many people have lost their lives during the demonstrations, though the Iranian government has not released official figures.
While the protests began as an economic grievance, they have grown to include calls for the removal of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. International media have suggested potential U.S. involvement, with former President Donald Trump expressing support for the protesters and warning against the use of lethal force. Reuters reported that such statements may have emboldened demonstrators, further intensifying the unrest. Iran has maintained that the protests are an internal matter and warned against foreign interference.
In response to the unrest, Supreme Leader Khamenei labeled violent protesters as terrorists and stated that the government would take necessary measures to restore order.
