KATHMANDU: Bangladesh National Party (BNP) Chair Tarique Rahman is set to take the oath of office as Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Feb 23, following the party’s landslide victory in the recent parliamentary elections.

Rahman will be sworn in along with members of his new cabinet.

Representatives from Nepal, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bhutan, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Malaysia, and Brunei have been invited to attend the ceremony.

According to diplomatic sources quoted by the UK-based popular magazine Prothom Alo, the oath-taking ceremony will be held at the South Plaza of Bangladesh’s National Parliament complex.

Traditionally, such ceremonies are held at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban, the official residence of the President.

However, due to the large number of international guests expected, the venue has been shifted to the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

In Thursday’s election for 299 seats, vote counting for 297 constituencies has been completed, with the BNP securing 209 seats.

Counting in two constituencies was halted following court orders.

Meanwhile, voting in one constituency was postponed after the death of a candidate.

Bangladesh’s National Parliament has a total of 350 seats, including 50 seats reserved for women.

The reserved seats are allocated to parties proportionally based on their performance in the directly elected constituencies.
