KATHMANDU: Thirty central committee members of the Nepali Congress (NC) aligned with party president Sher Bahadur Deuba held a lengthy meeting with leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala on Tuesday morning to discuss ways to resolve internal party disputes.

The discussion, which began at 8 a.m., lasted for over two and a half hours.

Prominent participants included Chinakaji Shrestha, Dila Sangroula, Ramjanam Chaudhary, Uday Shumsher Rana, and Arjun Joshi.

The members urged Koirala to take a lead role in addressing the conflicts within the party.

The meeting comes after the Central Executive Committee decided on Poush 18 to postpone the 15th general convention to Baisakh, based on majority consensus.

The decision had sparked disagreement from leaders such as General Secretary Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma, triggering intense debate within the party.

Koirala has emphasized that he respects the majority decision but has not openly opposed or fully endorsed the special general convention.

He suggested that the convention be held after Magh 6, once all procedures for nominations to the National Assembly and House of Representatives are complete.

He assured that if the Central Committee calls a special convention in a way that accommodates all sentiments, it would be acceptable, adding that a unanimous decision by the committee would allow the convention to proceed smoothly. “We discussed various modalities with Koirala to reduce internal disputes and move forward, and he appeared positive about it,” a leader told Makalu Khabar.

Koirala also clarified that while he may form alliances in the National Assembly, there would be no alliances in the House of Representatives.

He warned that alliances could increase direct seats but reduce proportional votes, causing long-term harm to the Congress, and stressed that the party should contest the upcoming elections independently.

Earlier, these 30 central members had separately met with President Deuba and General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwaprakash Sharma, emphasizing the need to prevent any potential party split.
