KATHMANDU: Supporters of the Nepali Congress’s second special general convention have adopted a strategy to take the party’s internal dispute to the Election Commission.

Citing Section 57 of the Political Parties Act, 2073, they sent a letter to the commission on Poush 16, demanding directions to the party president, acting president, and the Central Working Committee.

Although the commission has not formally responded, an official said that a few days later, the faction submitted a file tied with a rope containing signatures of 54 percent of the total convention delegates.

“The dispute escalated to the point that a special convention became inevitable, so they submitted the signature file tied with a rope,” the official said.

According to the party statute, a special convention can be demanded by at least 40 percent of the convention delegates.

Earlier, on Ashoj 29, a petition bearing signatures of 54.58 percent of the delegates had already been registered at the party’s central office.

The ongoing special convention at Bhrikutimandap is preparing to dissolve the existing Central Working Committee and elect new leadership.

General Secretary Gagan Thapa has assured delegates inside the convention hall that the special convention will gain legal legitimacy.

However, party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and the establishment faction have maintained that the convention is illegitimate.

The Election Commission has stated that it generally does not intervene in internal party disputes but will examine the matter if official documents are submitted after the convention.
