KATHMANDU: Myanmar’s federal parliament has announced that it will select the country’s new president this Friday, April 3.

The announcement came after the vetting process for the three nominated vice presidents was completed.

The contenders for the presidency are Min Aung Hlaing, Nang Ni Ni Aye, and U Nyo Thar.

Earlier, on Tuesday, the elected representatives of the lower house, Pyithu Hluttaw, chose Min Aung Hlaing as vice president, while the upper house, Amyotha Hluttaw, selected Nang Ni Ni Aye. On the same day, the military representatives in both houses elected U Nyo Thar as the third vice president.

The Presidential Electoral College, comprising all members of the federal parliament, will now choose one of the three vice presidents as Myanmar’s new president.
