MPs urge quick action on corruption, prisons, education

KATHMANDU: In today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, members of parliament raised several pressing issues, including legislation related to the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), corruption control, good governance, prison conditions, and other current matters, calling for the government’s immediate attention.

Amar Bahadur Thapa, a member of the CPN (Unified Socialist), questioned the whereabouts of the CIAA (Third Amendment) Bill, 2076, which was passed by the National Assembly, urging for its swift approval in the House to strengthen corruption control and governance.

Arjun Narasingh KC of the Nepali Congress requested the government to conduct a thorough study of prison conditions across the country and take immediate steps for their improvement.

Asmakuari Chaudhary from the CPN (UML) highlighted alarming incidents of violent clashes among inmates in prisons, some resulting in fatalities, urging the Ministry of Home Affairs to take these matters seriously.

UML lawmaker Ishwar Bahadur Rizal emphasized that the parliament is a platform for debate and criticized those boycotting sessions, suggesting such actions suppress the voice of the people.

Ishwari Gharti, also from UML, voiced concerns over errors in the Secondary Education Examination (SEE) and Grade 12 results, which have caused mental stress to students and parents, calling for reforms in the examination system.

Chiring Damdul Lama Bhote of the Maoist Centre informed the House about the recent landslide on Shrawan 12 in Limichaur village of Humla, which has put the entire community at risk, urging the government to relocate affected residents to safer areas.

Additionally, lawmakers including Kaluram Rai, Urmila Thebe, Kantika Sejuwal, Ganga Karki, Dr. Chandrakant Bhandari, Chandrabhadur Bishwakarma, Chiring Lhamu Lama Tamang, Javeda Khatun Jaga, and Julikumari Mahato Mahaseth raised various contemporary issues affecting the daily lives of citizens, seeking government intervention.
