MP Sah accuses govt of wrecking economy through “tax terror”
MP Sah blamed the government's tax policies for soaring production costs, declining trade, and the collapse of the industrial sector.
KATHMANDU: Prabhu Sah, a Member of Parliament from the Aam Janata Party, has accused the government of devastating Nepal’s economy by imposing what he described as “tax terror.”
Speaking during a session of the House of Representatives on Sunday while discussing the Appropriation Bill, MP Sah blamed the government’s tax policies for soaring production costs, declining trade, and the collapse of the industrial sector.
“Our industries are in ruins and trade is in disarray. Places that once saw daily transactions of Rs 50,000 are now struggling to reach even Rs 25,000,” Sah said. “This is solely because of tax terror.”
He criticized the government for exerting excessive pressure on businesses in the name of taxation and failing to provide any relief to entrepreneurs and industrialists. “Each new government brings its own version of tax terror,” he stated. “The cost of production has surged, causing serious damage to the economy.”
Sah further alleged that the government’s budgetary policies support capital flight instead of protecting domestic capital.
He also objected to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s absence during the deliberations on the Appropriation Bill under the Prime Minister’s Office, calling it “reprehensible.” “The Prime Minister is running away from Parliament. This is unacceptable,” he remarked.
In addition, Sah equated the government with corruption, saying that the lack of good governance and accountability has plunged the country deeper into crisis.
