MP Rai opposes govt’s draft bill legalizing polygamy
MP Rai criticized the bill, which reportedly allows married men to enter into a second marriage, saying it promotes gender inequality and encourages violence against women.
KATHMANDU: CPN (Maoist Centre) MP Durga Rai in today’s HoR meeting raised strong objections to the government’s draft bill that proposes legal recognition of polygamy under specific circumstances.
MP Rai criticized the bill, which reportedly allows married men to enter into a second marriage, saying it promotes gender inequality and encourages violence against women.
She urged the government to withdraw the draft, warning that legalizing polygamy would increase violence against women and lead to more abandoned wives.
“Why does the government want to make a law that permits polygamy? For whose benefit is this law being drafted? If your son-in-law takes a second wife, would you be happy to say ‘well done’? Otherwise, why bring a law that fuels violence against women and abandons men?” she questioned.
