MP Kathayat slams govt over visit visa scam, demands judicial probe
She objected to what she called a superficial approach to a grave international crime, claiming that a temporary committee was formed merely to deflect public attention.
KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Binita Kathayat has strongly criticized the government for its lack of seriousness regarding organized corruption and human trafficking carried out under the guise of visit visas.
Speaking during Friday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, MP Kathayat accused the government and state apparatus of losing their sense of accountability towards citizens.
She objected to what she called a superficial approach to a grave international crime, claiming that a temporary committee was formed merely to deflect public attention.
“The government remains indifferent even when organized corruption and human trafficking under the cover of visit visas have become pressing issues both inside Parliament and on the streets,” she said. “Instead of addressing the issue with the seriousness it demands, the government is trying to dismiss it through a makeshift committee.”
Kathayat further demanded the formation of a judicial commission or a parliamentary special committee to properly investigate the matter. She stated that the RSP rejects the existing probe committee, calling it a mere face-saving attempt.
“This is no longer just a national concern — international attention is rising, including from the United Nations and friendly nations. Even Indian media have started reporting on this issue,” she added.
Additionally, she questioned the CPN-UML’s refusal to accept the proposed two-year cooling-off period for former bureaucrats before entering politics, asking, “What is UML’s reason for opposing the cooling period provision?”
