KATHMANDU: Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal lawmaker Prakash Adhikari has said that good governance in the country is deteriorating, and public trust in security agencies is rapidly eroding.

Speaking during a parliamentary discussion on the proposed amendment to laws related to the Nepal Police in the State Affairs Committee on Wednesday, MP Adhikari expressed concern that even in day-to-day situations, people increasingly feel the need for police intervention.

“Trust in the government has weakened. Our society has reached a point where police presence is needed even while eating a meal or resolving domestic disputes. That is a clear reflection of how our social fabric has evolved,” he remarked.

Adhikari warned that without the proper implementation of federalism, the existing malpractices and institutional failures will persist. “We have entered a federal democratic system. If we don’t operate according to its principles, the prevailing distortions will not go away—they have emerged because of failure in governance,” he said.

He also noted that the absence of clear legal provisions has left the police institution in a vulnerable state and emphasized the need to rebuild public confidence. “The bill has come late, but it’s a positive step. Further delays are unacceptable. We must act swiftly,” he added.
